Michael A. Sayette, PhD, is Professor of Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh, with a secondary appointment as Professor of Psychiatry at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He also serves on the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and the Center for the Neural Bases of Cognition, a joint program of the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Sayette has published primarily in the area of substance abuse, with a focus on the development of psychological theories of alcohol and tobacco use. Dr. Sayette is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. He has served on National Institutes of Health grant review study sections and is on the editorial boards of several journals. He also has served as an associate editor of the Journal of Abnormal Psychology and of Psychology of Addictive Behaviors. Can’t believe I never heard of this before. It was recently recommended to me by a professor at Cal. This is like “College Board” for psychology graduate schools, all in one inexpensive book. In just two hours I now have a list of 19 schools I’m interested in, ranked by cost, admission rate, and APA internship placement. Amazing.

I love this book, it lists every school for what I would like to do in one place and breaks down what their program is like along with tons of supplemental resources to make a truly informed decision. Best buy ever! And a great reccomendation by one of the chairs in my psych department.

This book is just as relevant today as when it was first written, and reading it confirms ands supports my personal decision to become a vegetarian/vegan. I recommend it to anyone who is weighing that choice. However, it should come with a trigger warning. Our cruelty to animals on the farm and in our laboratories is depicted in vivid detail, and what I learned from reading it will stay with me forever.

I read this book nearly 40 years ago and became a vegetarian because of it. Singer, a philosopher, writes clearly and effectively. Today the public knows more about factory farming and experimentation on animals, largely, I think, because of this book's influence. Yet he understands that for some people becoming completely vegetarian may prove too daunting, so he says to do as much as you can. He isn't strident.

Peter Singer presents some cold hard facts about morals, ethics and animal mistreatment. This book shines a light on some uncomfortable truths, but is illuminating in re-aligning the discussion around how we treat our co-earthlings. I've suggested this book be read by friends and family to which the reply is "no, I am scared about how it will make me change my life." It is for this exact reason that this book needs to be read.

This is a MUST read for anyone who loves and respects all living creatures. The down side is that you'll also be ashamed to be a human being when you're done. Peter Singer did a brilliant job of putting this book together. It's The Bible for all Animal Advocacy groups.

I couldn't stop listening when I picked up the Audible version of this book. What we do to animals is appaling and unnecessary. No wonder Peter Singer has been called the "father of animal rights." His book, first published in the 70s and now updated remains as relevant today as it once was.

Many times I'll check a book out of the library first, to decide if it's worth buying. I decided this one is. I rarely get time to finish the library book before I've exceeded the allowed renewals. So after a few chapters of this book, I ordered the book (which allows me to underline all the important and interesting concepts). Looking forward to finishing the book.

Great book. I was introduced to Singer’s writing back in my undergrad days; this is still a great piece of writing without being so academic that you lose interest. I’m a dog lover, and I can apply my own experiences with them to what I’m reading.

I would not agree in its totality but the book entertains reaches easily the intention to enlighten. Moreover, humane consideration to animals is paramount.

L’amica geniale comincia seguendo le due protagoniste bambine, e poi adolescenti, tra le quinte di un rione miserabile della periferia napoletana, tra una folla di personaggi minori accompagnati lungo il loro percorso con attenta assiduità.
L’autrice scava intanto nella natura complessa dell’amicizia tra due bambine, tra due ragazzine, tra due donne, seguendo passo passo la loro crescita individuale, il modo di influenzarsi reciprocamente, i buoni e i cattivi sentimenti che nutrono nei decenni un rapporto vero, robusto. Narra poi gli effetti dei cambiamenti che investono il rione, Napoli, l’Italia, in più di un cinquantennio, trasformando le amiche e il loro legame.
