About the Author

Jonathan Valvano has been teaching microcontrollers and embedded systems at the University of Texas at Austin for 35 years. He has written seven college textbooks. His first three textbooks on the Freescale 9S12 have been widely used around the world. He earned his BS and MS from MIT in 1977 in the fields of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. In 1981, he received his PhD from Harvard-MIT in the field of biomedical engineering. He has over 100 journal papers, 9 book chapters and 10 patents in the medical device research area. He is a cofounder of a successful medical device company, specializing in miniature and low-power cardiac measurements. This book is very similar to the previous volume, "Introduction to ARM Cortex-M Microcontrollers". In fact at least 1/3 of the material of the book is a copy and paste from the previous volume. I would not recommend reading this book from front cover to back cover. In my experience, I believe it is better to treat this book more as a reference manual to refer to for topics you don't quite understand. The book basically talks about how microcontrollers work, particularly, the TM4C123 and the TM4C1294. It simplifies much of the formal talk written in the datasheets for those devices, but in exchange, does not cover the entirety of the exact functionality of those devices. There has also been an inclusion of Internet of Things as a topic in the later part of the book, although it still does not explain the concept very well and instead points the reader into some examples that utilize IoT. I would not recommend this book to people wanting to just read about microcontrollers and not taking a class about it. However, since this book goes together with the actual UT Austin class EE445L, you probably aren't buying it for a leisure read.For EE445L Students:1. I got this because it's volume 2 of the author's series and was referenced heavily in volume 1 which I enjoyed. A lot of the same material is covered but with different examples. These illustrate aspects of the TI Tiva ARM processor that weren't covered in the first volume in most cases. My only problems with the book are: 1) it's a print on demand book so the font and page layouts aren't as polished as an edited/published book, and 2) a lot of the same introductory material that detracted from the first volume is reprinted here. For the price of this textbook I can overlook the first - print on demand. For the second all I can suggest is you gloss over the first third of the book. If you started with the first volume you've read it once already anyway. Very worthwhile series in any event. The data sheet for this processor is over 1,200 pages long. The books really help you navigate through the information you need to know to use the processor.

This book gives you a very thorough look into the ARM Cortex-M4F architecture and soup-to-nuts perspective of "why" things are laid out the way they are, "how" you can architect and organize systems solutions around it. Great electrical engineering foundation material to link the digital realm to the analog reality. One thing missing that I hoped to find was a discussion on DMA. The feature is mentioned in passing but never covered.

Book is great! I am taking Valvano's class in the future, but reading it ahead of time was very enjoyable!

There are tons of starter code on his website which is really awesome. I have grown to like Keil IDEusing his starter code.

I love this book content, an excellent starting point to the sometimes confusing ARM Processor development, I'd suggest to promote the use of free software toolchains like GCC rather than focusing on a proprietary development environment such as Keil which licenses are so expensive, apart from that I really recommend this book!

Had the information I needed but I recommend using page tabs or bookmarks to keep track of the tables strewn all over the book. Would be nicer if they were collected in an appendix. I spent almost an hour trying to find control vector definitions in the book.

It is a very good tool for embedded systems designers like Me!

Jennie Ebeling, an expert in Syro-Palestinian archaeology, masterfully accomplishes her goal to explain what everyday life was like for early Israelite women in a book that is scholarly, engaging, and accessible to the general public.  Women's Lives in Biblical Times is unique.  Each chapter begins with "Orah's Story," fictional narratives about the life of an Israelite woman in the early Iron Age. Unlike popular novels based on biblical characters, the stories about Orah are informed and written by a scholar of the ancient Near East. Then, Ebeling uses her archaeological and historical expertise to explore stages in the life of women including birth, childhood, puberty, marriage, motherhood, widowhood, death, and burial. She explores the roles women played in agriculture, food preparation, and healthcare, as well as artistic celebrations such as dance and music. Ebeling's book will replace Diamant's novel, "The Red Tent", in several of my courses.
