Johnny Marr was born in 1960s Manchester to Irish emigrant parents and knew from an early age that he would be a musician. Forming his first band at thirteen, Marr spent his teenage years in public housing, playing guitar, devouring pop culture, and inventing his own musical style.

It wasn’t until the early eighties, when Marr turned up on the doorstep of a singer named Steven Patrick Morrissey, that both a unique songwriting partnership and the group recognized as one of the most iconic bands of all time were formed. In 1983, The Smiths released their first single, and within a year their eponymous debut album reached number two in the UK chart, paving the way for mainstream and critical success on their own terms. Fame in America, where The Smiths were beloved by fans desperate for a musical alternative to the power rock dominating the airwaves.

For Marr, tensions within the band and desire for a wider musical scope led to his departure from The Smiths in 1987, ensuring the end of one of the most influential British groups ever.

But the end of The Smiths was just the beginning for Marr. It contains lucid descriptions of the physical and biochemical aspects on the inner parts of cellular machinery, including how they work and interact in producing, regulating, and multipling cell numbers.

I ordered this book for my nanobiology class and it was easy to read and follow.

Someone recommended this book to me and it's definitely worthy. If you are looking for a book in biophysics or in a related area this is a good beginning.

Great condition and good textbook overall

I used this book for an undergraduate/beginners graduate course on biophysics, and read through all of it in 4 months. It is a fairly self-contained book, with few serious gaps. Admittedly, it is not light reading, but the festive and playful attitude of the authors is very welcome. I firmly believe that both the students and I learned a lot, both of biology and of physics. For the authors: as a teacher, I would appreciate it a lot if you could have all the equations in a collection of ppt files, the same way as you have all the figures in the book.

Good explanations. Some topics are discussed in so much detail that u may get lost, but its for good! I have had moments where I felt amazed by how human beings have broken down this nature to understand it better. Good book.

Chapter 3 The Supreme Principles of the Art of Shinobi (ichiryu no shidai) The Master says: “The work of a shinobi takes him to the very borders of what an individual can tolerate and it is only by exerting much effort that he is able to support it. These highly skilled individuals have to bear in mind when leaving their homes that they will never see those they love or their children again. Whoever returns home can rejoice for escaping his destiny. The shinobi places his heart beneath the blade of a sword. Similarly, while many people believe that ninjutsu depends on magic, that is not exactly true. Ninjutsu is a practical art and not the imposture of a charlatan.” This is when the disciple asks: “If one listens to the wind blowing, he hears that the art of the shinobi allows him to travel through inaccessible provinces and to soar over frontiers and customs posts that cannot be crossed. He hears that fathers and brothers are no longer able to recognize their own relatives who have become shinobi. Couldn’t the use of this art--such as when a man, for example, is convinced that someone is standing right in front of him, then suddenly feels the presence of someone at his back, only to turn and see that what he sensed has vanished--be compared to a mysterious rarity, linked to no other tradition? Isn’t this the art of practicing complete self-effacement when approaching people to glean information from them?” The Master answers: “If a person follows a crude principle or an art of little refinement, then that person shall surely make mistakes. But the correct path is marvelous. There are times when a shinobi recognizes reality with his heart, wraps it in a cloak of illusion (or nonreality) and presents it as reality. An experienced shinobi will recognize when an adversary is using the same principle and recognize the reality of the illusion. Chapter 5 The Teachings of Wolves and Foxes (koro no michi no narai) Foxes and wolves are very cunning animals: it is said that the fox can deceive man and that the wolf can read his very soul. They travel indirect routes and can solve the most difficult problems in an incredible manner. Although the techniques based on their example are extremely rare, it is absolutely useful to study them. When traveling along the official roads in enemy territory, you run the risk of stumbling into a checkpoint. So under no circumstances should a shinobi ever take these roads. Instead, use the technique employed by wolves and foxes, and stay away from the main roads; take the secondary routes. You should use the routes used by the native inhabitants, which are located a distance of at least two or three ri* from the checkpoints. You need to find a good pretext for using these roads. Depending on the situation and the desired objective, it may be necessary to disguise yourself as a priest, a mountain monk, or a merchant. In principle it is preferable for a shinobi to travel alone. First of all, he can then go wherever he wishes. If he is disguised as an itinerant monk, he can also be accompanied by two or three other shinobi. One of them should be an expert in languages (dakko no shinobi), capable of speaking the different dialects of sixty regions as well as capable of taking note of the important areas and places visited. The person who acts out of duress has lost the favor of heaven. The techniques of these kinds of experts are not handed down to their descendants. This corresponds exactly to the way cows and horses are led by their masters, and this is the reason the strategy was given this name. To devote yourself to gathering information, it is sometimes necessary, depending on the circumstances, to reside in the land of the adversary. The shinobi will be given complete latitude for thinking up a good reason for this: he can form bonds of friendship with people, pretend to be ill, marry a woman, speak ill of his own land and even laud the enemy country, and thereby pass for a traitor to his own country.

I purchased a used copy of this, but it looks pretty much new- which is great! My package arrived a lot earlier than expected. It arrived less than a week of ordering it although my order said it could be 1-3 weeks. Prior to getting this book, I was using The Technique of Orchestration by Kent Kennan and Donald Grantham. I appreciate the fact that the Blatter goes a little more in depth especially in the section about voice (which is a plus considering I am a vocalist). This review is mostly based on a first glance at this book, but it looks like it will be a great resource!

I have been a professional arranger/orchestrator for nearly fifty years. My copy of the first edition of this book, which I obtained in 1982, is well worn from constant use because it is the best source of accurate information about the widest variety of instruments.Alfred Blatter understood what an orchestrator wants and needs to know about the capabilities and limitations of the instrumental forces. For students, this book provides reliable data on which they can build a useful and dependable knowledge base. For experienced writers, it is a superb source of reminders as well as information about some instruments for which one may not have previously encountered.The book's fingering charts have often helped me make decisions about how a tricky passage could be made more comfortable for the players. Information about accessible ranges for student performers vs. those of professionals has also been of immense value to me.In short, this book is an excellent reference work.

This is a terrific book. Blatter codifies various ways of putting sounds together in orchestral writing. This has helped my students significantly both is expanding their horizons, and tightening their writing.

This is the best book on orchestration that also includes detailed information on contemporary techniques with examples from the current repertoire. The writing and organization is clear. I did a detailed comparison of all major orchestration books before I made a purchase and this was my choice. I have no regrets but if you have any concerns, go the library and do a comparison for yourself.

Great reference.

As others have already stated, This is an excellent text on instrumentation - information about any instrument you're liable to encounter. Octave ranges, tunings, fingering charts, myriad examples of techniques particular to varied instruments used in scores - generally anything you would want to know about instrumentation without actually learning how to play all the instruments discussed. By comparison, the orchestration chapters are a little thin. Of course, it could be argued that orchestration/arranging is a more or less intuitive skill that can be honed by studying the full scores of others - however, a more in-depth resource for orchestration/arranging is probably out there. But again, an excellent reference manual for instrumentation. it is a little on the expensive side for what you get, as it is a textbook.
